한글에 대한 뭇 언어학자들의 경탄

 

Geoffrey Sampson 1985, Writing systems : A lingustic introduction 의 7장(120~144)이 한글을 다루는 부분이다.

 

첫 단락의 내용의 마지막 문장은 아래와 같다.

 

... Han'gul, which has been descirbed as 'perhaps the most scientific system of writing in general use in any country'(Reischauer 1960, p. 435), or more simply as 'the world's best alphatbet'(Vos 1964, p. 31)

 

그리곤 한국과 중국과 한자의 관계에 대해 열심히 설명하고 한글 창제와 한글의 운명에 대해 이런저런 이야기를 한다.

 

이렇게 이야기하다가 마지막에 다양한 비판을 한다.

 

한글이 음성적 자질문자라고 해서, 더 배우기가 쉬운가에서부터 시작해서, 인쇄하기에 불편하다(이 책이 85년도에 나왔으니 그리 생각할 만도하다)는 내용등을 마구 이야기하다가, 마지막 단락에서 다시 극찬하며 끝내고 있다. 다음은 마지막 단락의 내용.

 

But it would be inappropriate to end this chapter on a negative note. .... Whether or not it is ultimately the best of all conceivable scripts for Korean, Han'gul must unqustionably rank as one of the great intellectual achievements of humankind.

그렇다고 한들, 이렇게 권위에 기대야지만 한글이 훌륭하다는 식의 주장을 하는 사람들은 좀 우끼다.
